These two mega trends are changing our society and will disrupt the status quo of transportation in the city. How can we combine current and create new and innovative solutions to fulfill the exact mobility need? Challenges that around 30 students from Berlin universities were trying to solve at the DigitalLife Campus Hackathon premier at the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF) in Berlin. On Nov 24/25 and in cooperation with the ECDF, our global hackathon series made stop in Berlin. After 24 hours of #ideating #coding #prototyping and little sleep, team "CityBuzzer" took the #HackBerlin crown. They convinced our jury of experts from Daimler, science and politics with their working prototype, predicting demand for mobility in real time by identifying sporadic events from social media buzz.
Have you ever met a neighbor while cueing at the post office to pick up your latest online order? Maybe a nice small-talk but also a huge waste of time. Since you are living close by, why not just one of you picking up the parcels for both of you. That is the idea of “Package Hunter”. It is an app that is consolidating these “pickup jobs” in the neighborhood and reward the one that is going for all. Less cues, less time wasted.
The 1st prize and a trip to the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona was sponsored by DigitalLife@Daimler and went to Team “CityBuzzer”. Thousands of people are looking for transportation every day, while at the same time taxi drivers are desperately waiting for customers. Problem is that they are waiting at the wrong location. “CityBuzzer” is an Artificial Intelligence that is predicting this mobility demand based on Social Media activities such as Twitter to guide the taxi drivers to the right location whilst reducing waiting time for customers.
No doubt, big Cities are jungles. That is especially true for people who have the need of using a wheelchair to come around. “Smove” is a platform that is collecting information about their everyday obstacles and feed a map with it. The result is a navigation system that is creating an obstacle-free route.
With DigitalLife@Daimler we bundle digitalization activities at Daimler to push and initiate digital transformation across all divisions at Daimler.
Our goal is to establish a new culture of innovation to combine the strenghts of Daimler with the strengths of startups: more founding spirit, more risk-taking and more speed. Therefore, events like hackathons are very important for us as we bring our digital interactions with students and professionals to the next level. In addition, it gives talented people insights into our company, while we benefit from external perspectives and innovative ideas.
